Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a complex disorder characterized by persistent and intrusive preoccupations with an imagined or slight defect in one’s physical appearance. People with BDD have negative thoughts about any part of their body. In reality, a perceived defect may be only a slight imperfection or nonexistent. But for someone with BDD, the flaw is significant and prominent, often causing severe emotional distress and difficulties in daily functioning. Due to the belief that they look “hideous,” individuals with BDD suffer from overwhelming distress and can have trouble focusing on anything besides their perceived defect(s). The somatoform disorders are a group of psychological disorders in which a patient experiences physical symptoms that are inconsistent with or cannot be fully explained by any underlying general medical or neurological condition. It is characterised by many different physical complaints. Somatoform usually begins in adolescence and it takes long term therapy to treat this condition. With medication and long term therapy one can feel relief. It requires a level of openness to talk and approach the underlying issues.
In dissociative disorder, the person avoids stress by dissociating or escaping from his or her identity. The person otherwise still has an intact sense of reality. This disorder is commonly known as Multiple personality disorder. This disorder includes dissociative amnesia which is characterized by inability to recall past experiences and this amnesia is not due to neurological reasons. Dissociative fugue involves amnesia that accompanies a sudden, unexpected moving away from home. In this state, the person is confused about his/her identity and may even assume a new identity. Depression usually involves feelings of extraordinary sadness and dejection. The essential feature is at least a two-week period during which there is a prominent and relatively persistent depressed mood (constant sadness, not like 1-2 days of sadness rather sadness as the only state of mood), or loss of interest in activities you used to enjoy before. Other indicators or signs can be appetite disturbances, substantial weight changes, sleep disturbances, decreased energy, feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt, difficulty concentrating or thinking, or thoughts of death. The intensity and degrees of this phase/episode can vary individual to individual and it requires individual care and assistance. In bipolar disorder, the person has a severe mood shift between two mood states/episodes, which are: manic and depressed states. To have bipolar, the person should have at least 1 episode of manic state. If a person has a depressive state then it is a unipolar mood disorder and not bipolar because bipolar means two poles which are completely different from each other. Mania states include periods of elevated mood or irritability and depression state includes persistent feelings of sadness and worthlessness and a lack of desire to engage in formerly pleasurable activities. A personality disorder is a pattern of behavior that is inflexible and maladaptive, causing distress and/or impaired functioning in at least two of the following: cognition, emotions, interpersonal functioning, or impulse control. There are ten personality disorders and out of which four are common namely most common ones are schizoid, narcissistic, borderline and antisocial. It takes long term therapy for personality disorders and it requires family support or family therapy as well at times.
Schizophrenia is a disorder that can be understood as the distortion of a person’s reality. This disorder impacts a person’s ability of thinking, feeling and behaving by changing the reality that they see, believe and react to. Schizophrenia occurs due to the combination of both physical environment and altered brain chemistry. Some of the common symptoms are: people begin to see people or hear voices of people who are necessarily not there, they begin to believe in reality that doesn’t exist such as someone is after their life or a celebrity is in love with them. Often this disorder can be reflected in their physical appearance such as they show no facial expression, are confused. In few of the cases their body

Autism is a developmental disorder that affects communication and behavior. Children with Autism may experience limited desire to engage in social interaction, trouble adapting and changing behavior, extreme difficulty in coping with unexpected change to routine or environment, and great difficulty in changing focus or attention. Anxiety disorder is common among children and adolescents. Separation anxiety disorder is a particular disorder which points to developmentally inappropriate and excessive fear or anxiety when the child is concerned with separation from those to whom the individual is attached. Unwillingness to go to school, fear of living alone and refusal to stay away from home or important figures.
Attention-Deficit/hyperactivity Disorder ADD (ADHD) is often referred as hyperactivity, is characterised by difficulties that interfere with effective task-oriented behavior in children, particularly impulsivity, excessive or exaggerated motor activity, such as aimless or haphazard running or fidgeting, and difficulties in sustaining attention. Children with ADHD are highly distractible and often fail to follow instructions or respond to demands placed on them. At times, children with ADHD also tend to talk incessantly and to be socially intrusive and immature.
